A CONSULTANCY and training services company with offices in 12 countries is preparing for more work on its own doorstep as part of the UK’s renewable energy revolution.
East Yorkshire-based Ferriby Group International, which works with businesses across the globe, is positioning itself to support an increasing number of companies operating in the emerging green energy industry.
It comes as offshore wind turbine manufacturers look to build manufacturing plants on the banks of the Humber estuary, close to Ferriby Group International’s UK head office in the town of Hessle, near Hull. These factories will assemble turbines for huge wind farms, planned for the North Sea, and will require a substantial supply chain.
Directors of Ferriby Group International believe the company’s location, and its extensive knowledge of the marine and manufacturing sectors, makes the business perfectly placed to help firms either entering, or already working in, the renewables industry.
The company, and its sister business Ferriby Marine, was established in 1990 by two master mariners to offer a range of consultancy and training services, including on health and safety matters, to ports and shipping firms.
Jane Hathway, general manager of Ferriby Group International, said: “There are a lot of maritime basics involved in the offshore wind sector – whether it’s establishing the process of shipping larger turbines out to sea, safely managing the transfer of marine engineers to these turbines, or coming up with proper environmental systems.
“Our experience working with some of the largest maritime companies around the world, either in terms of training, consultancy or third party auditing, means we are well prepared for helping the renewables industry as it grows in the Humber area and on the east coast of England.”
Ferriby Group International’s services include working with companies on documented management systems that meet the needs of various International Stadardization Organization (ISO) codes – a standard seen by many global renewables companies as a necessary requirement for businesses working throughout the supply chain.
Mrs Hathway said: “We can work with businesses on their quality assurance certification – helping these companies improve their processes and, hopefully, stand a better chance of working in the renewables sector.”
To support Ferriby Group International’s focus on green energy, the business has appointed Footprint Renewables to handle its public relations and marketing.
As part of its deal with Ferriby Group International, Footprint Renewables – a Hull-based specialist PR and marketing company that only works in the renewable energy sector – will design a new website for the business.
Karel Newlove, key account manager of Footprint Renewables, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Ferriby Group International in its home region, the Humber, as the area becomes the UK’s capital of green energy.”

Iconic Hull design centre to work with Ferriby Group

July 2011

Ferriby and Arc

Non-executive chairman of Arc, Paul Gregory, with Captain Graham Botterill, from Ferriby Group International.

ARC, Hull’s landmark design and architecture centre, is to create an environmental management plan with help from a local training and consultancy firm.

Ferriby Group International has been selected by the centre to support its bid towards forming the plan and achieving a recognised, global accreditation.

The work is part of a move to return Arc, which has an iconic pavilion in Hull city centre, to its original aim of promoting sustainability and green thinking.

Specialists from Hessle-based Ferriby Group International will work with Arc over several months, on a root-and-branch review of its processes and procedures, covering everything from its use of natural resources and waste disposal to energy consumption and carbon emissions.

This information will then be documented, before it is assessed by a third party – with the aim of attaining an internationally-recognised accreditation known as ISO14001.

As consultants and training assurance specialists, Ferriby Group International works with businesses around the world, including many in the marine sector, and has offices in 12 countries.

Captain Graham Botterill, managing director of Ferriby Group International, said supporting Arc represented an excellent opportunity to work on the firm’s own doorstep.

He said: “This is a tremendous chance for us to work with a high-profile, prestigious, organisation in our home area.

“Arc has set out a clear intention to be a leader in sustainable working and achieving ISO14001 accreditation will reinforce this commitment.”

He added: “Achieving ISO14001 is a challenging process and ensures an organisation and its people really think about how they operate – with the potential to improve all aspects of a business.

“When a business is successful in gaining this accreditation, it proves to other firms that the company is worth talking to and working with. This can often lead to more opportunities to tender for new work.”

Since 2004, Arc has been the design and architecture centre for the Hull and Humber region and aims to be the area’s primary port of call on issues surrounding sustainability and the built environment.

One way Arc will go about doing this in the future is by offering advice to other businesses and organisations on more environmentally-friendly ways of using and occupying their buildings.

The approach is aimed at refocusing Arc’s work on its original remit and values.

Paul Gregory, non-executive chairman of Arc, said achieving ISO14001 was a key way of helping to do this.

He said: “It’s about practising what we preach. We recognise that ISO 14001 is a fantastic, tough, standard for us to work towards.

“Indeed, it’s a benchmark we need to set ourselves and to reach, and it naturally fits with our wider aim of advising other organisations on sustainability.”

The work with Arc comes as Ferriby Group International, and its sister business Ferriby Marine, looks to complete more projects related to the expanding green economy, including renewable energy.

The company’s directors believe the firm’s knowledge of the marine sector and its location in the Humber area – set to be the UK’s capital for renewable energy – makes it a perfect partner for the offshore wind industry.
